Is Cell Phone Use Linked to Brain Cancer?

Due to recent research, some people believe that cell phone use is linked to brain cancer. Cell phones put out radiofrequency (RF) energy, and exposure to high levels of RF can heat body tissue. The RF energy goes through the antenna, which it held by your head because when using a cell phone, you hold it right at your head and neck which is why people believe it can cause brain tumors to develop because it’s simply right there. There are two types of electromagnetic energy, low and high frequency. Cell phones don’t give off high frequency waves, so some believe they’re not strong enough to cause brain tumors to form. However, it is not yet known whether low frequency waves are able to cause brain tumors. The popularity of cell phones had increased dramatically it this past decade. In 2000, there were 110 million subscribers to cell phones in the US, in 2005 there were 208 million subscribers, and in December of 2008, there were 270 million subscribers. This myth exists because as technology increases, people want to find the causes of diseases so that they may become preventable. If cell phones are becoming an issue, people are going to want to know and then do something about it.

The myth that cell phone use is linked to brain cancer can be explained by scientific radiation. This is a microwave type of radiation that, in this case, goes through your ears to your brain and cause benign and malignant tumors to the salivary gland.

There is some scientific research that shows that cell phone use is not linked to brain cancer. According to
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones, the electromagnetic waves are not strong enough to cause brain tumors to form because they are low frequency. However, their website also says that more cell phones are being developed with high frequency waves, so that could have an impact on the results of current testing going on currently. However, according to http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080214144349.htm, research was done that proves this myth to be correct. This experiment was conducted on the Israeli population and is said to be significant. The Israelis were eager and quick to adapt to using cell phones, as it was new and exciting technology to them, unlike other countries. 500 of those people who heavily used their cell phones were soon diagnosed with benign or malignant brain tumors. People who used a cell phone heavily on the side of their head where the tumor developed had an increased risk of about 50% for developing a brain tumor than those who didn’t use cell phones. The scientist who conducted this experiment, Dr. Sadetzki, says “This unique population has given us an indication that cell phone use is linked with cancer.” Considering all the other experiments I have read about, there have been an even amount of sources that say that this myth is true and that it is false. In addition to that information, they also say that considering cell phones are fairly new, there has not been enough research done to declare whether cell phone use is or is not related to brain cancer.
